Fishery under new ownership

Fishery under new ownership

Thursday 28th July 2016

The Fishery changed hands at the end of June with Seb Parker & Angela Tadd becoming the new owners.

Mallard and Willow lakes are open as usual with great sport for all the family; carp to 10lb, Crucians to 1lb 10oz and Roach / Rudd to over a 1lb being caught regularly throughout July.

Unfortunately Kingfisher lake & Farmyard pond are no longer available for fishing.

Work has begun clearing a stock pond in the third field to help in the managment of the fisheries stocks, netting of the lakes will happen during the winter to provide great fishing for 2017.

A longer term plan is to dig a third lake in this field, watch this space!

April's fundraising for Macmillan Cancer Support

April's fundraising for Macmillan Cancer Support

Tuesday 31st March 2015

Throughout the month of April 2015 at West Pitt Farm we are raising money for Macmillan Cancer Support Charity.  Adrian and I are joining the 11th Grand Tour, Cape to Cape April 2015 classic car tour in France raising money for Macmillan. Starting from Cherbourg and finishing in the Côte d’Azur. We are using a lovely E-type Jaguar for this event to raise money for Macmillan Cancer Support. While I know we are not running a marathon or cycling from one end of the country to another, I will have the challenge of navigating! Adrian’s is patience and to ensure the car is up to the trip and not cut short by a major breakdown!  We pay for this trip ourselves and donate gifts for an auction on the last day.  We are also donating income from the Coarse Fishing Lakes, Events and our Swimming Pool at West Pitt.  We have a JUSTGIVING PAGE for donations and WILL MATCH THE TOTAL RAISED. Please help to raise as much as possible for Macmillan. THANK FOR YOUR SUPPORT.

Gaia Wind Turbines

Gaia Wind Turbines

Tuesday 6th May 2014

Earlier this year Gaia arranged for an inspection of the foundations and bolts of our first wind turbine (installed 2010) following problems last year with other turbines.

The inspection identified that one of the bolts had failed with an indication on two other bolts.  Carol-Ann Stevenson of Gaia Customer Service advised "therefore we would recommend that the turbine is placed on brake until any remedial works are carried out.  We would recommend that the turbine is upgraded, with a new foundation being put in place and subsequent bottom section.  I will issue a quote to confirm the nature of the works and the expected costs".   Our turbine has been shut down for over two months and no reply from Gaia as to when and how much the work will cost.  I wonder if anyone else is in the same situation with their turbine?

14th August 2013  Our second Gaia wind turbine blade was replaced in April this year and we are seeing much improved performance.  We are keeping track of both the turbines.

Energy generated is used to heat our indoor swimming pool at West Pitt Farm.  An energy management system from CoolPower monitors the output from the two Gaia wind turbines and uses surplus energy to heat the pool water.  When it’s a windy day the pool heats 90degrees c. When it’s not so windy the backup system keeps the pool above 84degrees c. West Pitt Farm has the first installation like this anywhere in the UK.  The turbines save about 35 tons of CO2 emissions per year, that’s about the same as an average car would emit over 15 years!

22nd September 2012   We have installed two Gaia wind turbines, the first two year's ago and the second last year.  Although they are both 11kw turbines, exactly the same and in the same location at West Pitt Farm, their performance differs greatly.  The first is producing 25% more electrictity than the second turbine.  Gaia and the supplier cannot explain why!

Devon Tourism Awards 2013 Silver Award for West Pitt Farm Cottages

Devon Tourism Awards 2013 Silver Award for West Pitt Farm Cottages

Thursday 14th November 2013

Devon Tourism Awards 2013  :  There are many fantastic holiday cottage businesses in Devon and I knew I would be up against strong competition, however I decided to enter West Pitt Farm for the 2013 Awards for Best Self Catering Holiday Cottage with the thought that the process would be useful for me and our business. It made me focus on what we have achieved for our guests and what we plan for the future to ensure they continue to have a great experience.

After several late nights drafting the form, my entry was completed and submitted just in time. Several months went by with no news and I assumed that we had not been successful. Then suddenly on a Sunday morning I received a call from one of the Judges asking to come by to meet me, find out more about what we do and to see our cottages. I may have had a mystery enquiry by email or ‘phone prior to this!  The assessment was quite a nerve wracking experience as I had no idea what to expect. However, our Judge was very thoughtful and seemed to be pleased with all we do and are doing for our guests. We were shortlisted for an Award!

The Awards Ceremony on Wednesday 13th November at the Grand Hotel Torquay, a Black Tie event, was hosted by Judi Spiers of BBC Radio Devon. With 15 different Tourism categories, it was going to be an interesting evening. We shared our table with a team from The Calvert Trust Exmoor, an excellent outdoor adventure holiday venue for people with disabilities; and The Director and Curator of Tiverton Museum, a super small visitor attraction where many of our guests visit while staying at West Pitt Farm.

From our Table our Category for Self Catering was first and Adrian and I were delighted to receive a Silver Award with the quote ‘a wonderful business and a fine example of what a quality farm holiday should be’. We were thrilled. Tiverton Museum and The Calvert Trust both had entered in previous years and attained Bronze; they were keen to improve. Both attained Gold and well deserved too.

West Pitt Farm holiday cottages are in a super location with lots for our guests to do onsite with an indoor heated swimming pool, games’ room, grass tennis court, fishing and a lovely country path; together with attractions nearby such as the Grand Western Canal for walking and cycling. We offer something for all the family and dogs are welcome too. Our eco lodge with excellent disabled access has been awarded 5 Star by Quality in Tourism and we were awarded Gold by the Green Tourism Business Scheme earlier this year. We have a high number of repeat guests who are delighted to see that we continually make improvements to our cottages and facilities to ensure they have a great time in our lovely location in Devon.

10 Things you can do to help with a green holiday while at West Pitt Farm in Devon

10 Things you can do to help with a green holiday while at West Pitt Farm in Devon

Tuesday 24th September 2013

Our policy at West Pitt  is to minimise our impact on the environment while offering high quality, comfortable accommodation in Devon’s glorious countryside.  Here are 10 things we suggest our guests might do to help with a greener holiday at West Pitt Farm in Devon.

1. Conserve energy. Please switch off lights when not required and when you go out of the cottage. Close windows and doors when the heating is on. In fine weather use the washing line to dry your washing.

2. Conserve water. At West Pitt Farm our water comes from our own borehole providing fresh spring water to all the cottages. Please remember not to leave taps running.

3. Travel by train. We can arrange a complimentary pick up and return to Tiverton Parkway Rail Station which is just a few minutes’ drive from West Pitt. There are lots of ideas for days out by train too.

4. Give the car a rest. At West Pitt Farm there is plenty to do on site with our indoor heated swimming pool, games’ room, grass tennis court, fishing, children’s play area together with walking and cycle paths nearby. Map packs are provided together with local cycle hire information.

5. Days out under an hour’s drive. Enjoy all Exeter has to offer and use the Park and Ride service. There are free red badge day tours too. Experience wonderful wildlife at Escot Park. Have fun at Crealy Park. Visit historic homes and gardens such at Knightshayes Court, Powderham Castle and Hestercombe Gardens. These are just a few of the ideas we provide for days out nearby.

6. Reduce, reuse and recyle. Use the easily accessible and clearly labelled bins to recycle items. Remember to take bags when going shopping. Let us know if have not used any linen or towels in your cottage to save washing.

7. Remember to shower before using the swimming pool. This will reduce the amount of chemicals required to keep the pool clean and reduce the amount on your skin. Remember to cover the pool following your swim; it will help to keep it warm for your next swim.

8. Follow the Countryside Code. Respect wildlife and other people enjoying the outdoors, protect the environment and wildlife by not leaving any litter, keep dogs under control and always clean up after your dog, close gates and follow paths.

9. Shop local. There are two farm shops just a few miles from West Pitt Farm offering excellent local produce. In addition, there are markets in Tiverton and Cullompton just 10 minutes away.

10. Let us know how we can improve. We welcome any ideas you may have for a greener holiday.

Birthday treat for son

Birthday treat for son

Monday 4th June 2012

Stuart and his son had a great day's fishing...

"I just wanted to thank you for an absolutely fantastic day on Sunday 13th May.  We fished from 8am - 8pm and caught somewhere around 100 fish, by far our biggest ever haul!  My son had the time of his life and still can't stop talking about what an incredible day it was, and all on his his birthday. We really couldn't have asked for a better day. We came home sunburnt, knackered and with grins like Chesire cats!  The ponds and surrounding area are absolutely beautiful and you clearly care a great deal about the whole set-up so thank you for all your efforts.  Many thanks again, I'm sure we'll be back soon!"  Stuart Eaglesome

We look forward to seeing you again at the Fishery.

Two wind turbines provide energy to run our indoor heated swimming pool at West Pitt Farm in the Heart of Devon

Our biggest project to date is the installation of two 11kw Gaia wind turbines on the hilltop about 500 yards from the holiday cottages.  An energy management system monitors the output and uses surplus energy to heat our indoor heated swimming pool water.  When it’s a windy day the swimming pool heats to 90 degrees c and when not so windy the backup system keeps the pool above 84 degrees c.  West Pitt Farm has the first system like this anywhere in the UK.  The turbines save about 35 tons of CO2 emissions per year that is about the same as an average car would emit over 15 years!

What do to over Half Term

What do to over Half Term

Sunday 15th January 2012

Just had a great day out at Dawlish Warren followed by lunch at Powderham Castle.  Took Holly and Sally, the dogs, for a run alone the beach.  With glorious sunshine today it was a pefect day out.  Dawlish Warren is only about 30 minutes' drive from West Pitt Farm.

Dawlish Warren prides itself on being one of South Devon's top family beaches. Distinctive sand dunes and an internationally recognised nature reserve add uniqueness to this nine time European Blue Flag award winning beach.  Dogs are welcome at certain times of year.

Lunch at The Orangery Restaurant at Powderham Castle was excellent.  Althought the Castle is closed until April, outside you are welcome to explore extensive grounds full of natural rugged beauty and relax in the peaceful surroundings. The Castle is set in a fabulous Deer Park, on the edge of the Exe estuary, only a stone’s throw from Exeter.  There are amazing far-reaching views and wonderful wildlife on the estate on a deer park safari.

See www.visitdevon.co.uk website for more information about Dawlish, Powderham and other days out.

Excellent fishing at West Pitt Farm

Saturday 7th May 2011

Paul Warren from Wellington has reported his recent catches on Mallard Lake : "Sunday - 125lbs - 80 fish - of which 5 were crucian best 2lb 3oz - best carp 4lb 13oz - I used 14 elastic - size 16 hook.  Monday - 103lbs - 49 fish - 1 crucian 1lb 8oz - best carp 6lb 10oz - I used 18 elastic - size 12 hook.  I think this proves on the pole you catch more with lighter elastic and smaller hooks at this time of the year."

David Bell visiting West Pitt Farm Fishery for the first time last week: "Just a quick note to say thanks.  We have been at your ponds twice this week and were very impresed.  Having fished all over the southwest we have never found a cleaner or well presented fishery.  We have told all our fishing friends and will be back next Wednesday to have another go.  Thank you once again."  David Bell

Planning a party or family get together

Planning a party or family get together

Sunday 3rd April 2011

Our large cottages at West Pitt Farm are perfect for birthday celebrations, anniversaries and family get togethers. Lake View Cottage has a large hall where up to 18 can be seated for a meal.  Food deliveries from local farm shops and supermartkets can be arranged prior to your arrival.  We have several suggestions for local chefs should you be keen to have a meal prepared and served for your special occasion.  See our "Planning Your Stay" section on the website.

Last weekend a family stayed for a 60th birthday and with ages ranging from a 2 to 92 years there was something for everyone at West Pitt.  The glorious weather helped too to make the weekend a great success.  The grass tennis court became a excellent croquet lawn.

For their special meal, the family arranged for Denis and Patrick, The Two Frenchs Chefs from Wellington, to prepare and serve a super menu tailored to their requirements.  Starter: Creme vichysoisse served with sauteed spinach and truffle oil and chicken and herb ballotine with mango and avocado salsa and tomato.   Main: roast chump of local lamb with creamed potatoes and red wine sauce and a mediterranean vegetable crumble with basil infusion.  Dessert: flambéed banana served with caramel sauce and vanilla ice cream and raspberry crème brulee with glazed fresh figs

"Hi Denis, Just a note to say how delicious we all thought our meal was on Saturday evening. You probably know that we enjoyed it, I think, from all the empty plates that came back to the kitchen!   The evening was really successful. Thank you again."  Mary Ferguson

Holidays for large groups

Holidays for large groups

Monday 22nd November 2010

If you are looking for a special property for a large party, perhaps for a family anniversary, celebration, several families holidaying together or a hen weekend; at West Pitt we have two large cottages which can be combined to sleep up to 18.

Planning dates with family or friends, choosing the right property and facilities, finding a caterer for your stay and activities to suit everyone can be daunting and time consuming. At West Pitt we help with planning and by providing suggestions and information on all aspects of your stay from making sure there is space to gather together around a dining table for a special meal, super market deliveries, private catering, travel and things to do.

Guests recently at West Pitt for an anniversary said "A huge thank you for a fabulous week's holiday. The Farmhouse and Lake View Cottage combined were perfect and created an idyllic environment for us to get together and enjoy each others company. The kids loved the pool, the games' room, the play area and long walks surrounding West Pitt. We enjoyed great days out at Escot and Bicton and would have had more had the kids not loved just simply being at the cottages. We would also like to thank Scott from Scoff Catering and would highly recommend his services. Thank you." Jenny and Roy from Petersfield

Aiming for self-sufficiency

Aiming for self-sufficiency

Saturday 20th November 2010

Looking for a greener holiday in the heart of Devon but expecting quality accommodation and facilities, West Pitt Farm may be the holiday for you. We are producing our own electricity following installation in October 2010 of an 11kw wind turbine set on the hilltop about 500 yards from the cottages. It should provide sufficient power to make our heated swimming pool carbon neutral. Future projects should allow West Pitt to become self-sufficient for all its electricity. Our new cottages are insulated and equipped to Carbon Lite standards, far in advance of current building regulations. Low energy lighting thoughout. Our water comes from our own borehole and wastewater is treated and returned to the ground via soak-aways. Find out more about our cottages and environment on the website pages.
